Long overdue post… it’s been a week since I’ve been here and I am finally mustering the energy to write a post entry to prove that I’m still alive… Writing a new entry gets harder by the day you know? More stuff piles up…. I’ll try to keep it short but exciting
Orientation: 26-30th was a fairly straightforward orientation week, we had a timetable we had to adhere to and sign up for stuff. We all hav eour own mailbox which is great, we can send parcels to the uni and they notify us. My friend bought a bike from amazon.jp and they delivered it free to the uni in only a few days! Incredible
The language placement test was really hard work since it was quite long and I left the room quiet brain dead. I got an interview since my grades put me in limbo between level 5 and 6 (levels 6 and above need interviews). They put me in 5 in the end which is the one I was hoping for since the beginning anyway so I’m really glad my Jpaanese hasn’t went backwards and I’m at the appropriate level that I’m meant to be studying at! LOL
During orientation week I stay in the dorms and it’s quite hellish in that every single student is squished into the dorms and the rooms. The overflow of students put a lot of pressure on the proxy servers and the internet becomes slow as heckie! That’s why I haven’t been able to communicate with anyone until now that I’ve moved out of the dorms. I was with two really nice roommates and we got along well for the most part. One was from Bristol and one is from Connecticut?? They’re both pretty cool people!! Having three people in a room was a bit too much for me though and I don’t think I could manage living with a roommate for a whole semester so I’m gl ad that i ended up moving out to the homestay family where I at least have my own room. I do miss some of the people at the dorms though and the much later curfew. The futons are super duper comfy too and maybe even more comfortable than the double bed that I’m sleeping on right now. I was really intimidated by all the students at first but I’ve managed to befriend a few of them and even plan to travel together so that’s a huge relief! No local Japanese friends yet but I’ll keep working on that
On Saturday I met my host family! It’s a really big family! There’s the parents, Yanagi-san and Urara-san, and three kids, Sumire (Suu-chan) who is 5 years old, Toranosuke (Tora-kun) who is 3 years old and Ryuunosuke (Ryu-kun!) who is only 9 months old! Toranosuke and Ryunosuke are such cute names hahahhaahaha I think it’s because Ryu-kun was born in the year of the dragon and Tora-kun in the year of the tiger wow I wonder how many Ryu-kuns and Tora-kuns were born in 2010 and 2012 lol
Anyway since I’m a big kid myself I get along quite well with the kids so every day has been quite a lot of fun. We went to the pet shop and game arcade before dinner on Saturday (it was sushi and I tried a lt of weird stuff like salty seafood pudding) and on Sunday we went to Aeon mall in Kyoto. We went past the Toji temple in the car but it was raining so we didn’t go up (it would have been fine to go up even in rainy weather if we weren’t with three kids). Aeon mall is quite new and really nice! Lot of Western and Eastern brands. We spent a long time in Toys R Us and later Tora threw a really big tantrum because he didn’t want to go home.
Today was the opening ceremony and first day of classes! My timetable is quite terrible. I finish at 6:10 on Wed-Fridays which means I don’t get to hang out on Friday nights as much and I have huge breaks in the middle too. I only have one class and finish at 12:50 on Tuesdays which is nice. I might meet with my speaking partner, Exit-san tomorrow for lunch. I met her briefly on Saturday as well and she gavem e some kibi dango from her hometown in Okayama (kibi-dango is famous in Okayama because it’s the dango that the grandma gave to Momotarou when he left to fight the demon king and the story of Momotarou is thought to originate from Okayama). We decided to speak English in one meeting, Japanese the next and English again the time after etc. Haha to entice us to keep meeting each other lol
And that’s what’s been happening over the past week! There’s internet and wifi where I’m staying now so I’ll be a little more active from now on. Congratulations if you read this whole post hahaha ok I’m going 2 bed later haters
